International Win for Lee Westwood
The Portugal Masters was played through October 18, 2009 and led Lee Westwood into a comeback for a golf win. After two years of competitions that did not offer the best return, Westwood was finally able to take home the championship and a new hope for future competitions.
Westwood completed his last round with a 6-under 66, which led him to complete 23-under 265 for the overall Oceanico Victoria. For international competitions, this has led Westwood to the front line of the European tour money list. He was followed at the second place by Molinari, with a 70, and Padraig Harrington came third with a 67. While this was a close score for those in the competition, Westwood noted that his win came from a bogey-free round at hole 17, which kept him in a two shot lead above others through the duration of the tournament.
The main accomplishment that Westwood has noted with this championship win comes with his ability to overcome his losing streak from the past two years. In 2007, he won several finishes and was one of the top players. He then lost the next three championships which closed out two years of leaving the wins behind. His comeback is expected to help him move back into the top ranks while allowing him to move back into the top of his game for the next set of competitions.
With this international championship, Westwood is expecting to continue to move forward with new wins for the remaining challenges. While this moves Westwood into the lead for the European tour, there are still several international competitions that will offer new challenges for Westwood and those playing in the next rounds.
