First and foremost is Silence is Golden. You should never ever be speaking when people are about to shoot. This also applies when you are approaching a green, tee box or any player that is about to make a shot. Stop your progress, stand still and wait until they have completed their shot.

On the green, you must never walk on another players line, also worth noting here is standing too close to a player, or too close to the hole. Even having your shadow impede a player’s line can cause havoc. You should be well away from the player as well the line of his shot. Also another one that is bothersome and is borderline cheating is standing behind a player to watch the roll of the ball in the event you have a similar line.

Other etiquette issues that irk me are guys that have no respect for the course. We’ve all seen them storming up and down the fairways in the power carts. They never rake the traps when they are done, replacing a divot is non existent, and rarely do they repair ball marks on the green. These three are big ones that really bother me, I have many times told my playing partners that they must follow these simple guidelines. Perhaps they’ve never been shown how to repair a ball mark, fair enough, I show them.

For the slow players, you must always allow the group behind you to pass if you are holding them up. A general rule of thumb is if you can’t keep up to the group in front of you, then you should be allowing the group behind you to play through. If the course has a Marshall you will be warned about slow play which can result in you having to omit a hole in order to maintain the pace.

Basically the degrees on the wedges effect the loft and type of shot you will make. For reference a gap wedge, is slightly different than a lob wedge and both are quite different than a sand wedge. Your beginner set likely has a SW and a PW.

Your friend that swears by the 60 degree wedge is likely right, and others likely call this club the lob wedge. In fact you may see some that just have an L on it. The lob wedge is an excellent club to get the ball high in the air and put tremendous spin on the ball. It is typically good from 50yds and in. Now in comparison a 52 degree up to a 56 degree wedge is considered a sand wedge. The variance in degrees is mainly to do with the sweet spot, and minimal yardage. If you were to take your 52 degree wedge and hit 50 balls, and then do the same with a 54 or 56 degree you are not going to see a whole lot of difference. You will notice a bit of difference in ball control as well feel. It becomes a personal preference at least in my opinion.

Excerpts shared by members of the New York Times, suggest that Haney states in the book that Tiger may in fact have injured his ACL during the stint with the Seals. This may or may not be a factor considering Tiger won five tournaments in 2008. It was said that he worked out with the Navy Seal team in late 2007. In the reviews of the book suggestions are that it was well written and focuses mostly on Haney and Woods’ relationship, apparently more of a working relationship than a friendship base. Going back to the Popsicle story, often times when they were spending time at Tiger’s house he would grab himself a popsicle, but never once asked Haney if he would like one. Haney had too much respect to help him, and at one point stood up and requested “Hey do you think I could have one”? Some think this is a stab at the misguided social skills Tiger had.

Parts of the book also touch on the relationship between Tiger and his ex-wife Elin Noredgren. Haney suggests that their relationship was off for some time. And that it only seemed true at the dating stage. Even then time spent together was ‘awkward’ and Tiger insisted that Elin hold her emotions in check even when he was winning. Another example; when Tiger won a tournament, Elin wanted to hold a big party to celebrate. Tiger refused stating ‘we don’t do that, we’re supposed to win”.

So love Tiger or Hank or hate them, this book should be an interesting read. I am guessing that there was some creative marketing behind having its release one week before The Masters.

Pro Golf instructor Hank Haney began working with Adams which initially focused on customized clubs for every golfer. Haney at the time was running a golf shop called the Hank Haney Golf Ranch.

Working together they created the Adams Tight Lies brand. With Haney aboard, and legendary golf host Jack Whittaker promoting the product on television and print the business exploded. The fact Haney was then coaching Tiger Woods likely didn’t hurt either.

Through the mid to late 90’s the company became very successful and went to public offering , on Wall Street. In ’99 Adams was awarded the Golf Club Manufacture of the Year Award. This morning after speculation for the last few months TaylorMade golf announced that it was purchasing all shares to the company for a total of $70 million. Adams has had a firm grasp over the past few years with regard to the ever popular hybrid clubs. High handicap golfers as well professionals tend to sway towards the Adams product. This is something that TaylorMade has been focusing on for some time. I personally use an Adams Tight Lies 4Hybrid I find it to be extremely forgiving and good for about 220 yards.

I would say this was a sound investment for TaylorMade considering a search on sales for 2011 show Adams sold over $96 million in merchandise.

The PGA was incorporated in 1968. What was once known as the PGA of America changed to what is now known as the PGA? Let’s look at some interesting facts:

• John Daly, a favorite among many golf fans won his very first major tournament in 1991 in Indiana at Crooked Stick.
• Did you know that Tiger Woods while playing in his first professional tournament scored an ace? It’s true he had a hole in one in 1996 at his first professional event, the Milwaukee Open.

• Arguably one of the best golfers ever to play, Sam Snead finished in 8^th place in the 1975 Canadian Open, he was 63 years old.
• Arnold Palmer one of the best ever, entered the Senior PGA Tour in 1980. He did not enter the Championship that year but did the following year and won it, he was 51 years old.
• Golfers didn’t make as much money in the old days as they do now. Arnold Palmer’s biggest payday came in 1971 when he won the Westchester Classic he made $50,000.
• How many majors did Arnold Palmer win? Arnold won seven major championships which included the Masters four times and the British Open twice.
• What tournament is older, the British Open or the US Open? The British Open is older, they began play in 1865 while the first US Open was held in 1895
• Who won the first British Open? The man that won the first British Open was Horace Rawlins. The Englishman pocketed a neat $150 for his accomplishment. They also provided a gold medal to him.

My first investment other than balls, the odd wedge and a driver upgrade from time to time was a pull cart. I was tired of carrying my bag all over so I decided I needed to get a pull cart. Over the last 5 years I have not really invested in my game with the exception of the GPS which shaved strokes off my game. The guess work is gone, and it is like having a caddie in your back pocket.

If you are looking to purchase a Golf GPS you will be astonished at the number of choices you are faced with. The end result is the same in that you want to know how far you are from say the green. Not all Golf GPS units are the same however. Some offer the basics with regard to distance only; others have all the bells and whistles. By that I mean you can see what the slopes are, you can see where the flag is placed, and you can mark off hazards and hot spots where you want to put your ball.

There are a number of products on the market the most popular being Bushnell, Callaway has a nice line of Golf GPS, Garmin, Golf buddy, and IZZO also are popular. Skycaddie as well Skygolf have software that works well on a hand held device such as your iPhone, Blackberry etc. For me I went with the Callaway uPro MX, paid just around $200 for it and I am very happy with it. Came preloaded with over 25,000 courses, has hi resolution views, aerial layout of the entire hole with easy navigation to bring in specific areas of the hole, green etc. As I mentioned I have only had this for one year, but it has changed the way I play golf. It’s likely outdated this year with all of the new models hitting the market. I’ve actually heard that Callaway has recalled many of these based on poor performance. To date I am happy with mine.  If you don’t have a Golf GPS we will be discussing some of the best Golf GPS units on the market for 2012.

The newest option the Sky Caddie SGX is one that is on the top of most golfers’ wish lists. This version boasts over 30,000 loaded courses. There is no need for downloading your courses, just open the box, turn it on and you’re ready to go after a brief setup. The screen is crystal clear and 3inches in size. The view is spectacular through the non-glare high resolution screen. With the SkyCaddie SGX you have hole options, and SkyGolf has also incorporated an Interactive HoleVue option with Zoom capability. Now you will know where the pin is located and also where best to land you ball on approach. The SkyCaddie SGX also provides distances to hazards, how far you need to carry the hazard as well layup distances. Once you’re set up you can also maintain your scores and stat track your rounds as you progress through the season.

Overall the Skycaddie SGX has everything you need. The positives far outweigh the negatives. The only real negatives that I have are the upfront cost. $3-400, and the fact that you also need have a subscription to their server. These costs range from $25-$50 per year. The price variance is dependant on what options you choose. Overall most golfers have not taken on the technology options that are available. When you think about it, if you can hit the ball to any course marker such as the 200, 150 100 yard marker, you pretty much know what club you have in your bag that is going to get you there. Having the GPS in hand will provide you with precise numbers but are you really that good that a yard or two will make a difference? Most of us aren’t so you need to weigh your options. The cost plus membership would pay for a number of rounds throughout your season. Purchasing a golf GPS is a personal choice.  The Skycaddie SGX has everything you would want in a Golf GPS unit.

The Masters has been held every year consecutive except for 1943-45 because of World War I. The tournament field is filled with all of the best golfers past and present, and once you win a green jacket your able to come back and play in the tournament every year. Players that have won the US Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship in the last 5 years are all automatically invited. If you’re lucky enough to get in the field and can place in the top 16, you will also be back the following year.

Want to go to The Masters? Masters Tickets are hard to come by. Fans need to enter a draw 2-3 years in advance and then you are basically getting in by luck of the draw. You can either get there by luck, or pay big money buy purchasing others tickets. If you go to the Masters be sure to check out Rae’s Creek, Hogan Bridge, Amen Corner, and of course you can’t miss the monstrous pine trees, dogwoods and azaleas. Make sure you get a shot of Magnolia Lane as you make your way towards the clubhouse. Get a shot beside Eisenhower Tree which is on the 17^th hole.

Rory McIlroy was born in Northern Ireland in a town called Holywood which is located in the County Down. He held his first golf club at a year and a half and his father taught him the game early on. Interestingly the senior McIlroy, Gerry was also a very good golfer playing to an even handicap.

Rory’s Dad new early on that his son had the focus and drive to become a professional golfer. He spent hours with him and watched as he bloomed in to the best golfer in the world. Just last week after winning the Honda Classic he became the World’s number one ranked player. When Rory was 15 years old his father was working as a bartender in a pub, he and 4 pals decided to place a wager on Rory to win the Open Championship by the year 2014. Each man threw in one hundred pounds and bookmakers game them 500-1 odds. Quite the gamble and quite the payout if he indeed does pull it off.

Rory McIlroy joined the ranks of professional at the age of 17; he was the youngest player ever to crack the top 50 which came in 2008. As Rory became more and more popular he had numerous sponsorship offers. People often ask “what kind of golf clubs does Rory McIlroy use”? With the Masters just around the corner it will be interesting to see how Rory makes out this year. Over the two day period the teams match up against each other playing single man stroke play. Points are awarded based on total team score. Last year Nona won with a score of -43. There is a solid prize purse that last year totaled $2.15 million dollars. Every year there is a designated long drive hole throughout the tournament. There is a separate prize for this in the amount of $60,000 which is split among the winning team. My money is on Gary Woodland this year.

This year the Tavistock Cup will be held at Nona GCC. The entire event will be covered by The Golf Channel and is quite entertaining to watch.  It will be interesting to see if Tiger is healthy enough to play in this tournament. The Tavistock Cup may be a great spot for Tiger to test the leg as there is nothing more than pride on the line.
